English is magnificent 3

inside & outside
interior & exterior
internal & external

these words can all describe a structure such as a cave or house or body. inner & outer. they necessarily evoke a sense of within & without.
how else can we describe the state of being not under a roof, but in the woods, or in the street, or in a parking lot? a general way to convey that one is under the open sky, clear or cloudy? a word to describe being out-of-doors without having to presuppose the existence of doors?
